No two histories are the same size. Some are so tiny that you can nestle them in your hand, their translucent pages fluttering with your breath. Others range over many volumes, challenging the strength of your grip with the combined weight of their leather covers, rag paper pages and glassine illustration protectors. Some hold us enthralled with split-second events in tiny places, others stretch our thoughts by accounting for changes over billions of years across the universe.It is strange that there is no set size or scale for a history. After all, we have precise and often globally agreed on ways of measuring all kinds of things. There are com-mittees and inspectors to check kilograms and the green of traffic lights, for instance. Not so for histories. This book argues that ethics helps to explain why histories vary in size and scale and that the variety of histories across time and space is good.
