Public transparency is included in the Standard to ensure that communities potentially affected by activities of the crustacean farm have access to information to ensure that the farm is operating responsibly within the country’s legal system. ASC believes that this increases the probability of both the communities and farmers acting as responsible neighbours. The ASC Shrimp Standard intends for producers to present auditors with evidence demonstrating compliance with applicable regulations. Cross‐country comparisons of “adherence to the law” will not take place under this certification, as the other major issues of concern are addressed in subsequent ASC Shrimp Standard Principles, thus rendering the need for legislative evaluations unnecessary.
