E-book Sea Turtle Conservation
Turtles are in the class Reptilia, which includes snakes, crocodiles, and lizards. Marine turtles belong to the order Testudines, the first specimens date back 220 million years. Marine turtles are thought to have come from land turtles and freshwater turtles that lived about 230 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. The earliest sea turtle ancestor found so far is Desmatochelys padillai, an early Cretaceous species that lived about 120 million years ago, although it is believed more primitive species are likely to be discovered (Cadena, 2015). Archelon ischyros remains has shown that turtles had previously been a huge reptile growing 5m and weighing 2200kg just 75 million years ago (Wieland, 2019). The two families left today are the Cheloniidae and the Dermochelyidae.
