This book focuses on production technologies for integrating the componentsof an intelligent textile system into a Smart Textile product. Both aspectsare treated separately and are covered by strong international research anddevelopment activities.The current industrial landscape strongly resembles an individual prototypeproduction for the numerous product diversifications. As a result, an enormousnumber of manual work steps is required, which massively increases productioncosts in high-wage countries and thus results in low market penetration of theotherwise innovative products.In this book, knowledge of previous Smart Textiles is summarized in orderto support future work in the development and implementation of Smart Textiles.The aim is to describe Smart Textiles in a structured way with regard to materialsthat are available for product developments (Part II), functionality with focuson textile-based sensors (Part III), production technologies for integrating thesefunctionalities into products (Part IV) and product concepts along the example oftouchpads (Part V). It will help designers to understand the possible methods ofSmart Textile production, so that they are enabled to design their products for scalableproduction. Moreover, it will assist textile and electronics manufacturers to decidewhich production technologies are suitable for meeting certain product requirements,thus contributing to reducing market entry thresholds.
