E-book Botany Illustrated : Introduction to Plants, Major Groups, Flowering Plants Families
The major category is called a division and is equivalent to phylum in the animal kingdom. Division name endings indicate plants (-phyta) and fungi (-mycota). In the top illustration are some examples of Magnoliophyta, the flowering plant division. The endings of lesser categories indicate class (-opsida), subclass (-idea), order (-ales), and family (-aceae). Classification of one specific plant is shown. One of the reasons the scientific name of a plant
may change is because it is discovered that someone else named the plant earlier. The newly found name is published in Latin. Another reason a name may change is that the plant is reclassified into a different group. There may also be many forms of a plant with separate species names, when later, it is decided they are all the same species.
