It was this idea of “be your own man” that drove me to become a student of life 15 years ago. For the first 22 years of life I was a student of whatever other people wanted me to study—a product of “schooling”—what occurs inside a square building with cold air-conditioning and oftentimes with teachers that are just as cold. School was the place where you memorize information, usually about the past, and then regurgitate it back in the form of tests. Early
on in my schooling I realized if I studied what the teacher wanted me to learn and then recited verbatim their words and insights, I could easily pass any class.
