E-book The Laboratory Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs hold a place in human history that predates the European acquaintance with this small mammal. Long before guinea pigs, or cavies, became synonymous with research subject, humans valued this animal as an important food source. To this day guinea pigs are considered a delicacy in many areas of South America, where domes-tic guinea pigs are allowed to roam and scavenge in and around the homes of the Indians.1 The guinea pig’s size, gentle nature, and coat variety make it a popular companion and hobby animal in the United States and other parts of the world. Researchers in the United States reported using over 203,098 guinea pigs in 1999 alone.2By the mid-1500s, the domesticated guinea pig had been intro-duced to Europe by Spanish conquerors and sailors. Traders carried the small, docile animal throughout Europe, where it was bred for fancy and as pets for hundreds of years before its use in research. Research with guinea pigs is generally acknowledged to have started in the late 18th century, when Lavoisier used them in 1780 to mea-sure heat production.3 Since then, guinea pigs have been extensively used in studies of immunology, nutrition, otology, genetics, and infec-tious disease.4,5It is uncertain where the misnomer “guinea pig” originated. Various names were used throughout the world, but it appears that some Europeans thought the animal a small pig from a foreign land. It has been suggested that the carcasses in the South American mar-ketplace resembled small suckling pigs, but it is more likely that the vocalizations of the animals sounded like the squeals of pigs. This image is carried further in the common names used for the male and female, “boar” and “sow.” “Guinea” may have been a distortion of the departure point from the new world, Guyana, or a result of confu-sion, because many ships stopped on the coast of Africa (at or near Guinea) on the way to Europe.1 One source has suggested that the name may have come from the price (one guinea) of the animal in the English markets.
