E-book Global Platform Work : Negotiating Relations in a Translocal Assemblage
This study seeks to explore and theorise remote gig workers’ everyday workpractices of making and sustaining global connections mediated by online platforms.By shedding light on an aspect of work that is usually unpaid and often overlooked, the insights generated from this study are anticipated to contribute to debates about how work can be organised, managed, and al-located more fairly. Moreover, with the notion of ‘practices of assembling’,conceptsofworkareextendedtobetterreflecteverydayexperiencesofworkin the gig economy.The study focuses on everyday practices by freelance de-signersbasedinIndia,whoconnecttooverseasclientsviaonlineplatforms.With online observations, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and digitalphoto diaries, I compiled key elements of a global assemblage of platformwork and related them to each other.This chapter begins with a short vignette of how Ankit,1one of the re-search participants of the study, organises his everyday work.This is followedby an outline of transformations in the world of work brought about by the growing influence of online platforms, and prevalent academic perspectives on platform work .Building on this, presenthe conceptual framework, the purpose of the study, and the research questions guiding analysis. Subse-quently,the research design and methodology are outlined.The chaptercon-cludes with an outline of how the thesis is structured.
