E-book The friendship of kingfish and toman fish
The local people of Sungai Silam (Silam River) narrate that the river is a forbidden fishing spot for a certan period. They may catch the fish in the river only with the consent of the adat leaders
and the elders of the community. This tradition is named maawuo. Maawuo is one of the unique traditions of Melayu people in Riau. In the beginning, the prohibition by community leaders to catch
fish is announced through loudspeakers in the big mosques as well as the small ones around the river or the lake. The prohibition lasts for five to six months to give ample time for the
fish to grow big and ready to harvest. On the day of harvest, all people would go in crowds to the river or the lake. The function starts with a prayer. Maawuo normally takes place in the
beginning of dry season.
