Sub-Saharan Africa has the most rapidly growing population of any region of the world. The human population is about 5M0 million and it is expected to reach about 1300 million by the year 2025. In 1990 354 million people, 71% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa, lived in rural areas and by the year 2025 this figure will have increased by more than 68% to about 5W0 million. Cities in sub-Saharan Africa are growing much faster than the overall rate of population increase. Urban areas now account for almost M)% of the population of the region but by 2025 more than half of the population, or about 650 million people, ar2 expected to live in urban areas. This rapid population increase in sub-Saharan Africa with expanding rural populations and growing urban popuiations will create even greater markets and demand for food including livestock and livestock products.
