E-book What is Down's Syndrome
Down’s syndrome (DS) was first described in detail by an English doctor, John Langdon Down, in 1866. It is a congenital condition which randomly affects about 1 in every 700 babies born throughout
the world, male and female alike. A ‘syndrome’ means a group of recognisable characteristics occurring together. A ‘congenital’ syndrome is one present at birth, one which cannot be ‘caught’ later on. The outlook has changed radically since DS was first described. Today, most children with DS lead healthy and fulfilled lives, and are integrated successfully into family and community life.
