Poems and poets : people greet them with scorn andpoke fun at them. Why is that? Because people take the realm of poetry to be the depic-tion of simple sensual beauty, self-complacent emotionalpain and dark melancholy—things not real mirrored in mor-bid sensibilities. If poetry required only a unique sensitivityand dreamy beauty, then hysterics and the mentally ill would necessarily be great poets. In fact, the pictures suchpeople draw and the words they write are very similar toart, but they are not art. Why not? Because they have no unity of ideas. If it were merely amatter of portraying emotional pain and unreal beauty, thenpoetry would be no more than beautiful chatter. Behind theemotions of human life lie the ideas that are the essential pillar of human life. Emotions are not simply emotions. Feudal emotions nor-mally well up from feudal ideas; free and unconventionalemotions are born from free ideas.
