Notwithstanding the identification of any specific pesticide for the control of pests and diseases, this decision is for the discretion of the Ministry of Agriculture Area Extension Officer and the farmer. The commercial pineapple (Plate 1) is the fleshy fruit produced by some varieties of the plant Ananas comosus (L.) Merr., a tropical member of the plant family, Bromeliaceae. Pineapples are an important non-traditional crop in the Caribbean where the increased commercialization of local production is often featured in diversification programmes. In the Caribbean pineapples are widely
grown in an extremely diverse range of production systems, including collection of wild types for small scale production, integrated systems based on local and highly adapted varieties and intensive production systems utilizing improved selections.
