The commercial pineapple (Plate 1) is the fleshy fruit produced by some varieties of the plant Ananas comosus (L.) Merr., a tropical member of the plant family, Bromeliaceae. Pineapples are an important non-traditional crop in the Caribbean where the increased commercialization of local production is often featured in diversification programmes. In the Caribbean pineapples are widely
grown in an extremely diverse range of production systems, including collection of wild types for small scale production, integrated systems based on local and highly adapted varieties and intensive production systems utilizing improved selections.
