It is told that once there was a mermaid who got stranded in Amza, Sorong, West Papua. The people of Sorong called the
mermaid karupet. Amza area in Sorong, West Papua, was famous for its beautiful and clean sea. Various types of fish thrived in the region, ranging from ornamental fish to edible ones. One day, a pregnant female mermaid was stranded on the beach
near the settlement. The pregnant mermaid was saved by a villager named Samawa. Samawa was an old widow who relied
solely on seafood for life. Samawa worked by helping fishermen sell their fish. Samawa’s husband had since long died of leprosy.
She and her late husband had no children.
